Happy New Year!
It has been awhile since my last post and I hope to be writing more this year. The Lord has been faithful and is at work in my life.
I hope to begin to share my recent journey soon and be more consistant in my post. So, until then, please keep checking for updated post.
Also, I would really like to hear from you. If I write something that benefits you, please let me know.
I will have a new post soon.
Happy New Year!
"And it came to pass" This a phrase I often use to remind myself and others that our life situations will not always be as they are today. I hope this blog will be used by God to encourage you and make us all aware that we are not alone in life's challenges. In time, God will provide and it will come to pass.

Getting Past Regrets
I suspect that most of us have regrets. Whether it is related to a job, college choice, relationship or life issue, we probably have a regret or two. The regret may be a distant memory or a recent occurrence; but either way, what do we do with our regrets? How do we turn the regret into something good.
I am sure every biblical character, except Jesus, has regrets. Abraham probably regretted trying to help God with His plan, Jonah may have regretted disobeying God's word to him. David regretted his affair with Bathsheba. Peter regretted his denial of Jesus and Paul regretted his persecution of the Church.
As I look to the Word of God and the examples of men and women before me, I consider their regrets or sins and then look at how the moved beyond them. Each one moved past the failure and did great things in faith. Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac, as the Lord instructed, and his faith was credited to him as righteousness. David taught us how to repent and teach transgressors God's way. Peter went on to preach at the Day of Pentecost, being used by God to write Scripture and Paul went on to be a great missionary and wrote most of the New Testament.
Romans 8:28 states "God works all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose". I firmly believe that nothing is wasted in the economy of God. God uses our failures to create humility and dependency upon Himself. In our failure, our need for God, His power and strength are intensified and more easily recognized.
I have plenty of regrets. The scheme of the devil is to keep me focused on regrets, those things that are behind; things I cannot change. The proper response to regrets is to repent of any sin that I have committed and then move on. Keep looking to Jesus, who is the "Author and Perfecter of my faith", who loves me and has a greater plan for my life than I can imagine. Regrets, if not properly dealt with, cause me to look at myself and then I waller like a pig in my feelings, feeling sorry for myself. What I must continually do is look to Jesus. I must keep looking forward.
If you are dealing with regret, look to Jesus, repent and then move on and let Christ finish His work in you.

Don't Be a Ted Baxter
You may remember a TV show from the 1970's called "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". It was about a young single women living in Minneapolis, Minnisota who works for a local TV statation, WJM. One characters on the show was Ted Baxter. He was the anchorman who reported all the major news stories.
In one episode, Ted and Mary are up for awards in their respective areas. As they are waiting to hear the results, Ted realizes that if Mary wins they probably won't give the same station two awards so he confesses that he hopes she loses so that he can win. In the end he wins and Mary does not.
For the rest of the episode Ted is running around interrupting conversations to talk about his award that he carries with him everywhere he goes. In general terms, Ted Baxter is a selfish, self centered person.
This made me think "Don't be a Ted Baxter". If you were to be a Ted Baxter you would have TBS - Ted Baxter Syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by the following:
We all struggle with this syndrome because in reality, this "TBS" is our sin nature. Because of sin, we always think about ourselves and what we can get or gain from everything or everyone
around us. In Christ there is a change that happens. It is new birth; it is to become a new creation; the old has passed and the new has come. (2 Cor 5:17)
Philippians 2 is one passage that teaches us about this change He makes in our lives to rid us of this "TBS". Here is what it states:
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Don't Be a Ted Baxter - Have the mind of Christ.

Embrace the Wind
For the past number of years I have been cycling. It started as a way to lose weight that my doctor said I needed to lose but wouldn't lose ( he tried a little "reverse psychology" and it worked). Then it became a way of life to keep the weight off. After riding some 4,000+ miles or so I stopped riding. I lost interest and become lazy.
Well, this year has begun a resurgence of intentionality towards riding. I have a new willingness to put on the gear, air up the tires and ride. The major problem I most often face riding in Kansas is not so much the hills (yes there are hills in Kansas) but the wind. Because of the rich farmland we enjoy in Kansas, there is a noticeable lack of trees to block the wind. A beautiful, sunny day of 83 degrees with a 21 mph wind is great for sailboats and wind surfers but not so much for cyclist.
With the windy conditions we have in Kansas you have to embrace the wind. If you wait for a calm day to ride you might ride 5 times a year. So, I am learning to embrace the wind. It is hard to ride against it. You have a sense that you are going nowhere slow. The sound of the rushing wind and the 9 mph on your speedometer can really cause to wonder why, why are you out here riding.
You struggle and struggle to make your way against the wind and you finally arrive at the turn around spot. It is then that you remember why you fight the wind, why you put up with legs that burn. It's because you have a tail wind all the way back. At one point a turtle could beat you and the next you are flying. But in order to fly with the wind you must first fight it. It is the struggle that makes you strong. It is the perseverance that rewards you with an almost effortless ride home.
There is a spiritual lesson to for us to learn. I call it "Embrace the Flame (trial)". Much like riding against the wind, life is sometimes a challenge; finances, health, relationships, etc. all seem to battle against us and make the ride difficult. We don't always understand why the trials come but James calls us to "count it all joy when you face various trials" (my paraphrase of James 1:2) So, it is in the midst of the trial that "faith is tested" so "that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" (James 1:3-4 NIV) If we wish the trial away or we do not facing it, we lose the benefit of it. The benefit of the trial, if we count it joy, is perseverance or the result of genuine faith, maturity and completeness.
When we don't give up, when we become mature and complete there is reward. A life well lived and a eternal home with Jesus. No matter how strong the wind or the trial, keep pedaling and count it all joy. The turn around point is just ahead.

Where is the hope?
We live in a time that seems to be different than other generations. News that would take days even weeks to reach us is now almost immediate. The decay of morals and the corruption of governments seems to be getting worse. We seem to devalue life and care more for personal agendas or personal rights.
Yet, with all of the badness of our world, its not new. When you look back at history, we see the same evil, selfish acts of terrorism and the murdering of innocent lives. The Preacher of Ecclesiastes states in chapter 1 verse 9 "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."
In the midst of all that is happening in our world there is hope. Our hope is Jesus Christ. He alone is the source of true hope for now and for all of eternity. But we often lose sight of this reality. We take our focus off of the Lord and put it on things around us. If we are not careful, we will put our hope in the political process. We will strive to legislate morality. We will fight for personal rights, when the reality for followers of Jesus is that we are slaves to Christ.
The Good News of the Gospel is that Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sin, was buried and arose on the third day. We need to share this good news. We know the world is corrupt, we know that people are sinful and selfish; what is right is called wrong and what is wrong is called right. What we all need is a change of heart. Only God through Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit can this change happen and this message of good news is ours to share.
The Psalmist states "Why are you downcast, O my Soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." Psalm 42:5
We can look around us and become hopeless and defeated or we can put our hope in God and praise Him and "... be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have". (1 Peter 3:15)

Perfect...Not!
Perfect : 1a: being entirely without fault or defect ...b: satisfying all requirements...
Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Please allow me to state the obvious...we are imperfect people living in a imperfect world. Yet, it seems, we are under pressure to be perfect. But is this idea of being perfect something we impose on ourselves or does it come from outside of us? I think both. We see all around us imperfection; baseball players striking out, baseball pitchers throwing balls, basketball players missing free-throws, politicians mis-speaking, etc. We see corruption and harshness in governments and selfishness abounds in all of us. If we make to many mistakes...not enough hits, strikes, free-throw, etc we may find ourselves without employment.
To realize that we are not perfect is helpful but not an excuse to willfully be disobedient to God's word or the law of the land. Mistakes will be made, we will sin but in Christ, God has called us to perfection, which is completeness. Jesus said in Matthew 5:48 "You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect". (ESV) This comes at the end of Jesus speaking about loving our enemies in the Sermon on the Mount and is a command. God the Father is our true example of perfection and therefore we are commanded to follow His example. While Jesus was on the earth, He was perfect, without sin, fault or defect and satisfied all requirements; was obedient to the Father.
Is being perfect even a possibility? Not in the sense of sinless perfection but in the sense of completeness; in a progressive way. We ought to be progressing in our holiness, godliness, righteousness and faithfulness. This is not accomplished on our own. It is completed in us when we are totally and completely in Christ. Paul states in Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (ESV)
Again, Paul says in Ephesians 4:11-ff "And he gave the Apostles, the Prophets, the Evangelist, the Shepherds and Teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unit of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood (italics mine) or a perfect man (KJV) ...to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." (ESV)
The point is not striving to be "perfect" by our standards but rather to die to self and let Jesus Christ live His life through you and be diligent to know His word, to pray, to give, to serve, to completely surrender everyday and live for His glory and honor.
I in no way have come to completeness in Christ. I struggle with my flesh like all of mankind but the words of Scripture are true. Therefore may we seek to be perfect/complete in Christ and not give up or give in to our misconception of perfection but rather rest in Christ and keep our eyes on Him.

Eternal and Great God
"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning: great is your faithfulness" Lamentations 3:22-23
The love and mercy and faithfulness of God are important attributes of God. All of them are important but Jeremiah points to these three as continual and new and great. I am thankful for God's attributes being the same. I am glad that he does not change like shadows and is not one way today and another tomorrow.
He is merciful and gracious towards us because He knows that we are weak and frail and made of dust. He is the One who made us, created us, knit us together in our mother's womb. He knows the trials we face and He knows how to "work all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose" (Rom. 8:28)
I am prone to focus on my mistakes, failures and troubles. The things I should have done or could have done seem to flood my mind. But when I think of verses like Lamentations 3:22-23, the LORD reminds me of Who He is. When I truly realize how great and awesome He is and that He created everything that is, that nothing is hide from His eyes, that He rewards those who love and fear Him (fear as in reverence and awe and love and adoration) , how can I for one second worry about tomorrow or what I am going to wear or what I am going to eat or what job will I have.
God loves me. His mercies will never end and He is faithful. Oh, that I would love Him with my whole heart, mind, spirit and body and love others as He has loved me; that my life would bring Him glory now and forever more.

Never Long Enough
Last night a good friend passed away unexpectedly. Death, when it comes, always comes unexpectedly. No matter how "prepared" we may feel, when it happens it is always a shock.
Death is a reminder that life is never long enough. There is more family time to be spent, more birthday parties to attend, more grand babies to be born, more holidays to be celebrated; there is just more life to be lived.
Death brings an end to what we had known as normal. Our loved one had always been there. For some, life has always been lived with their presence. Now life will be lived with that void. Scriptures reminds us that life is but a breath. A vapor that appears for a little while and then is gone. We are like the grass that is here today and then is burned up with the heat of the sun.
We know these things to be true. Most of us have experienced the death of a close relative or friend. So, what do we do now? It often seems that life won't or can't go on but day by day we make it through. For the follower of Christ, our strength is not our own. It comes through His Holy Spirit that resides in us. It comes from friends who express their sympathy and support. It comes from God's Holy Word and it's teaches that death, for the follower of Christ, is not the end; it is a continuation of the promised eternal life that Jesus promises for those who are called by His name.
Knowing that life is never long enough, live today to the fullest. Love and obey Christ, love your family and seek to do all that the Lord has for you.
Blessings

New Year
It seems that with every new year, we all set out to make changes in our weight or exercise routine. We may decide that it is time to learn a new skill or work on some unfinished project. The new year seems to provide a new beginning.
I am taking this new year to evaluate where I am and take stock of the good things and then look at the not-so-good things and then seeking to make any corrections needed. I have realized that I can make changes but I can't fix myself.
When I have tried to fix myself, I end up doing things that only last for a time. I am limited on what I can do except to become more and more dependent on Jesus Christ. This is not easy and its not about making external changes. The external changes are truly made when the internal thoughts and mind are transformed into the likeness and attitude of Christ. Only Christ can make true change happen.
I am a follower of Christ. I believe that the Bible is true in all of its teaching. I may not always understand or do what the Bible teaches but it doesn't take away from it being true. Each day I need to grow increasingly dependant to follow and obey the words of the Bible. Yet, I cannot do it on my own. It takes Christ living in me and the work of the Holy Spirit to give the understanding, knowledge and strength to follow His commands.
I pray that 2013 will be a good year for you and me. I hope that we all live godly lives in the power and strength of God our Savior and let Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, make those necessary changes in our lives for His glory and honor.

Too Long
It has been way too long since my last post. I have found it a challenge to keep up my blog since I am working at a new job and can't always write and when I get home, I am often drained of energy.
But today I am writing and I hope to get back to it on a regular basis.
I've been meeting with a group of guys for Bible study on Friday mornings for the past few weeks. Out of the four guys who were already meeting, I only knew one. It has been good to make new acquaintances and to engage in biblical matters. The main discussion today was on Jesus.
I have realized that what we believe about Jesus, his Deity, his pre-existence, his sinless birth and life and his resurrection will be foundational for all other matters of faith. If we get Jesus wrong, everything else will be skewed and will not allow us to see Jesus for who he really is - The Christ, the Son of the Living God.
I hope to go deeper in this subject in future writings so I hope you will check back often. In the meantime, don't ask "who is Jesus to me?" but rather ask "who is Jesus?".
Happy New Year!!

Let's Be Thankful
In Luke 17 we find an encounter that Jesus has with ten lepers. These men, who have been separated from life and their families, see Jesus and begin to cry aloud for Jesus to have pity on them. Jesus stops and tells them to go show themselves to the priest. As they are going the all experience total and complete cleansing.
What I like about this story is that it really reflects all of us. Before we came to know Christ as Savior and Lord, we were like these guys. We were separated and without hope. Then Jesus comes along and we recognize that we are in desperate need for healing from our sin. The Bible teaches, from Ephesians 2, that we were dead in our sins and trespasses. So, we encounter Jesus and He saves us and cleanses us..
The response in Luke 17 to what Jesus did, was mostly no response except for one. The nine just kept going to the priest and did not thank or worship at the feet of Jesus. But one did. A Samaritan foreigner. We often neglect to thank and praise the Lord for all that He has done.
May we not be like the nine who experienced cleansing and neglected to give thanks but rather be like the one who recognized what the Lord Jesus has done and fall at the feet of Jesus and worship Him.

Life is a Journey
It has been some time since I last had a post. I apologize for that. Life has had me on a journey I never thought I would take. But it is one that I cannot change. I have also sought and desired to make wise decisions; ones that would bring glory to God. Sadly, that has not always been the case. I am thankful for God's graciousness towards me and His patience.
One this journey, I have learned or maybe better yet been reminded that all the glory belongs to God. No matter the situation, job, or place of ministry, God deserves the glory. Life isn't about what we do; it's about how we handle things or react to things. It's about character and reflecting the Son in our life. It's about looking beyond the mundane or the tasks that lay before us and seeing the purpose of God and the avenue with which to bring God glory.
Serve God where you are with the giftedness He has given you and seek to bring glory to God.
I hope to be more faithful at sharing my journey with you. I still believe that things come to pass and I hope that my journey will encourage you on yours.
Take care

Something New
Over the past few weeks I have been on quite a journey. Having just moved back from Springfield to Salina, I was blessed to gain employment at a local dealer in outdoor power equipment. Then about a month later, I was blessed to be offered another job. This new job deals with wholesale plumbing and HVAC systems and supplies. Now the ironic thing about these jobs is that I had and have no prior experience or real knowledge with either industry. After spending so much of my life involved in local church ministry, it is challenging learning new things but rewarding at the same time.
One of the things that I have learned, in all this, is that the Lord can and does use me wherever I may be. Ministry is not limited to the local church. Ministry is in and through the church and it is in the marketplace. It is at school and at home. It is at the mall and all places we do business. I think I have had this perspective for some time but with the recent changes in my employment, this reality has become even more clear and is in better focus. So, let us never think that what we do 8 to 5 or everyday is just work or a waste of time. As followers of Jesus Christ, our life is buried in His. It is His life that is living through us in all and every situation and that makes what do important and valuable.

A Fresh Breath
Over the past few days I have been reading through Ezekiel 37. It is the account of Ezekiel and the valley of dry bones. It is a wonderful account of God demonstrating His power and sovereignty over His creation.
Through the prophet, speaking the words of God, the valley of bones come together. Not only do they come together but God puts sinews and flesh on the rejoined bones. But with all that, they are still dead until God sends His breath upon them. Then they become the living army that they once were. The life is in the breath of God.
There may be times in our life when we feel dry and distant from God. We struggle to spend time with God or the challenges of life get to us and we neglect the fellowship with Him by not praying or reading His word. Then God speaks and interrupts our dryness and sends His Spirit and revives us and restores us. The fresh breath of God changes our lives.
I long for the continual Spirit's work in my life. I realize that without God's sustaining power through His spoken word and the continual filling of the Spirit of God, I will become dry and lifeless. We need to keep in His word and we need to pray daily. These disciplines will aid us in knowing God and help us to not become dry and lifeless in our walk with Him.

Take the Good with the "Bad"
If your life is similar to mine, there are good days and then there are days that are not so good. I find myself despising the bad days and yet I must remember that both will come. I need to appreciate the good days and learn from the bad days; easier said than done!
There is this struggle to keep everything in perspective. Not everyday will be a good day. The days of sunshine and cool breezes can and will be replaced by dark clouds and rain and sometimes violent wind. In the midst of both days, God is present. He is the creator of all things and has set nature in it's course.
When the good days come, praise Him! When the bad days come, praise Him!

A Twist in the Road
Over the past few months, we have gone through quite a transition. We moved from our home of 15 years to a new but familiar area of the country in hopes of new adventures and maybe a "fresh" start. What we have discovered is that God granted us this move to help teach us faith, trust and that we are desperately in need of him for power, strength and mercy. So, this time has not been wasted at all and has served us well.
With that said, we are now in the process of moving back to our home. I still have no idea on what is next but we know that what we had in family and friends was and are valuable to us. I believe we needed this time to regroup, retool and realign ourselves to God and each other. We had lived in one place so long and had developed some routines and mind set that were not the best, maybe even wrong and selfish.
I have gained a new insight into the human condition and have dealt with my own sin and struggled to trust God. There are many who have gone through that struggle and are now in the midst of the struggle that I really had no idea what it was like. I took my faith and whatever biblical understanding I had for granted and trusted more in the outer practice than I did in the inner relationship we need to grow in our faith. Though unintentional, I had made life about the "appearance" and struggled with really being genuine. I truly regret that part of my life and am learning to live the crucified life.
So, as we take this "twist" in the road, I do understand that nothing takes God by surprise. I may be a little shocked on the twist but God is not. A scripture passage from Romans 8:28 has become a life verse for me and one that I have trusted in whole-heartedly. It states "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose".

Something I've Noticed
In the family room of my in-laws home there is a wood burning stove. Every house my father-in-law has lived in, there has been a wood burning stove. When we would come and visit, during the colder months, the stove would be loaded with wood and burning hot. I never paid much attention to it and how it worked.
Since we moved to Springfield in January, I have had to learn how to "operate" the wood burning stove. On the stove are two adjustments for air intake and there is an electric fan/blower to move the heat out of the stove. Depending on the air intake settings, the fire will either have great flame or no flame but greater heat. Sometimes the fire seems to be out altoghter but something I've noticed is that when I open the door to the stove and the sudden rush of air makes the embers really come alive and all of sudden the flames are large and consuming the wood more rapidly.
Very simply, we need the Spirit of God in order to burn hot for His glory and honor. If we, through sin and disobedience, limit the influence of the Spirit of God in our lives, we will not be the followers of Christ God intends. The longer we don't let the air in, i.e. the Spirit of God, we will become cold and useless. Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6-7 "For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." (emphasis added)
We need to allow the Spirit of God to "stir us up" and "rekindle" the fire of serving God with the giftedness we have as followers of Christ. This is a daily discipline to add new fuel (wood) to our lives. We must be completely dependent upon God to work and do what it is He does. We must fall in love with Jesus and "remember our first love" and not grow cold but burn hot with fire for God.
Prayer, Bible reading, meditating on the Word of God, serving, loving, demonstrating the power of God in your life are important disciplines we need to keep the fire burning.

What Was I Thinking
"What was I thinking?" I wonder how many times that phrase has been uttered by us humans? I am sure countless. We ask this rhetorical question following something we should have not done or following after we have eaten something we know we shouldn't have.
Where does this question lead us? Do we change and determine never to do the same inappropriate thing again or is it just a casual, fleeting regret? I wonder if Adam and Eve ever asked this question or if Sampson asked this question following giving up the secret to his strength? What about Jonah when he was in the belly of the whale for three days and nights?
The reality is that we don't have to wonder about these famous bible character's thoughts very long because we have sinned and then, whether internally or verbally, have shouted "what was I thinking!?!" When we worry or we are rude or we get angry or when we use hurtful words or fail to show compassion or _____________ (fill in the blank with whatever you have done that was contrary to the will and character of God).
What is the proper response to our sin? Paul states in 2 Corinthians 7:10 "For godly grief (sorrow over sin) produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief (just simple regret) produces death." Our response to agree with God about our sin and then to confess it leads to forgiveness and cleansing. 1 John 1:9 states "If we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
When we have those moments and say to our self "what was I thinking?" may we quickly come to our senses and turn back to the Lord, confess our sin and then receive his forgiveness and cleansing.

The Beat Goes On
It has been awhile since I last posted. We are still in the midst of searching for employment and adjusting to new surroundings. God is faithful and He continues to sustain us and provide for us during this time.
One of the good things that is happening is that I have been able to spend time with Shelly and Kara. They may be getting tired of me being around so much but it is still good to be here with them. The other benefit of this time is that we are getting an opportunity to visit a variety of churches. Having been involved in direct leadership in church ministry for so long, this time has been good so that I might get a new perspective on church life and specifically on worship services. We have gone to churches that were very liturgical in their music style to a church that had a concert feel during the singing and a smoke machine. The lyrics to the songs were biblical and were helpful but the styles have been extremely different.
This has been a reminder that the worship of God is not dependent on musical style but on truth. Scripture is clear when Jesus told the woman at the well that those who worship God must worship Him in spirit and truth.
So the beat goes on and we continue to follow the Lord and seek to honor Him in all things. We seek to surrender each day to His leadership, die to self and let His life live through us.

And it Continues
We have made our move to Springfield and are getting settled in and adjusting to a new city. I thought about this time in our lives as a new beginning and I guess in some regards it is. But in reality it is a continuation of what God started years ago. This is a new place with new opportunities but it is still the same life and the same God who is in control.
The one thing that I have realized and valued, over the past couple of years, is the meaning of one day at a time. I can get overwhelmed pretty easy but these past experiences have taught me to just relax and take things as they come. We are given one day at a time and we need to live one day at a time. If we don't, we begin to look too far down the road and begin to think of things that probably won't happen.
Jesus taught that we need to take care of each day as it comes and not worry about tomorrow because today has enough trouble of it's own. I am grateful for the Word of God and all that it teaches us.
No matter what you face today, remember to take it one day at a time and rest in the Lord.

The End of a Long Road
Today I conclude a 15 year ministry at First Southern Baptist Church. It has been a great time filled with excitement, growth, challenges, rewards and fulfillment. Words cannot fully describe and express all that I feel about this day.
When we came to the church my family was young and now I have three grandchildren. Shelly and I have spent over half our married life serving in this place and have enjoyed many good things as well as difficulties. All these years of serving have proved to be the greatest time in our lives and yet we sense that we are not finished and we have great friendships that I hope, in some way, will continue.
I am uncertain of what is next but God is not. God sees all things past, present and future. He knows everything so with that I will trust Him, follow Him and serve Him.
I am planning to continue this blog and will continue to share about this life on a regular basis. This change and transition will come to pass and there will be a new normal soon.
Happy New Year!

Change
When you hear the word change many things probably come to your mind. For some it might be a bad word. For others, they embrace change and enjoy the challenges that change can bring. For me, I am in the middle. I don't particularly care for change but then on the other hand I see that it is sometimes needed and seek to go with it and make the adjustments as needed.
Our family is embarking on a new journey. We have resigned our position at our church and are moving to another state. This means we are leaving our home of 15 years, our oldest daughter and her family, a ministry that has been fruitful and beneficial and a host of friends. It is not easy packing up my office or my home. In some respects it would be easier to just stay and not change. But, the Lord is leading us and we are getting somewhat excited to see what the Lord has for us in the future.
Change can be scary but it also can be exciting. If we don't change we will never know what we might do or become.

Where's the reset button?
I remember when we had our first home computer. After awhile, the dreaded blue screen would appear and we would have to do a system reboot and restore the computer back to factory settings. After that was completed, we could then start over in our use of the computer.
Have you ever wondered where the reset button is for life? At times, we find ourselves in situations and surrounded by circumstances that we wish we could just hit the reset button and everything would be cleared up and out and we could just start over. I know that I am not alone in having regrets and wishing to could go back and do something over or not do something altogether. We all make mistakes; it's a fact that we all live with.
So, when we come to that point in our life and realize that we need a time to reset, what do we do and where do we turn? The easy answer is turn to God and trust the Lord Jesus Christ. He can take our brokenness and turn it into praise. He is the answer.
Our reset button is found only in Christ. He is the One who makes our sin that is red as scarlet and makes it white as snow. When we confess our sins, He is the One that is faithful to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. There are no mulligans or do overs or clearing the table or resetting back to factory defaults. But today is a new day. His mercies are new every morning - great is His faithfulness. He doesn't condemn nor condone but is ready to forgive. We need to fix our eyes on Jesus - the Author and Perfecter of our faith - and keep walking with Him in His power and strength. We need to be filled with the Spirit afresh and anew each day.
I wish there was a button to reset things but there isn't one. The good news is that instead of a button for us to push to reset things right, we have a Savior that came and gave a perfect sacrifice for our sin so that it would not remembered anymore and would be separate from us as far as the east is from the west. God is the One who restores us and He does it through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God is Our Refuge
Over the past several months, I have faced a variety of challenges in my family and beyond. God has been at work the whole time but he has chosen this day to reveal a major truth that I must learn. Psalms 46:1 states "God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble" (HCSB) I have struggled with and in my own strength for many years. Other things have been my focus and it has not been God and Christ. As a result, I have not been what I need to be for my wife and family; neither have I been what my church family needs.
This living in my own strength, rather than in God's, has led me to react inappropriately to the changes around me. Our family dynamic has changed with our two older children leaving to attend college and then marriage. The church family has changed with leadership and membership. Family and church, and for me more church than family, has been my focus rather than setting my focus firmly on God and Christ. So, when all these things change, my foundation is rocked and I and my family become unsteady because I have tried to build it on my own and have not allowed God to be my refuge and solid rock.
God is and must always remain my (our) refuge. Not only is He our refuge, He is our strength. He is the One who provides, protects and supports. I am weak and often fail so I am in constant dependence for God. This is where I must live for the rest of my natural life.
Psalm 62:7-8 gives both a declaration and admonition "My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge". May we all take heed to the Lord's instruction and let God be our refuge.

By Our Love
The choir is going to be singing a song, "By Our Love", this coming Sunday, November 6th during the morning service. As I thought about the message of this song which calls brothers and sister in Christ to love others with comfort and with kindness, I was drawn to what Jesus said in John 13:34-35 "I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another:"
Jesus refers to "love one another" as a "new command". We already know that the greatest command is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart , with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind" (Luke 10:27a) and we know that second greatest command is "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27b). So, what make makes this command new? I had the same question.
I visited one of my favorite dead commentators, Adam Clark. In his writing on this verse he brings out that the action of loving one another is found in the example that Jesus sets before us. Jesus said that we are to love one another "Just as I have loved you..." This is what makes this a new commandment. The greatest commandment focus' our affection on God, the creator of all. The other commandment teaches to love our neighbor as we love our self, because all of us love ourselves and want to have help from others in times of need. What makes this new command new, is that now we are to demonstrate our love the way Jesus demonstrated his love for us. Our love is not based on ourselves alone anymore, it's rooted in the example that Jesus gave us.
How has Jesus loved us? The clearest example is his death on the cross. So, we are to love each other sacrificially. We are to love even when it cost and brings pain. We are to love with compassion and kindness. We are to love with truth and correction with gentleness.
Love God with all you are; love your neighbor as you love yourself; love one another as Jesus has loved you - the outcome will be glory to God, physical needs will be met and the world will know that we are followers of Jesus.
